Lori has always had a love for learning mathematics and teaching it to others. She attended college at Loyola College in Baltimore, MD, where she earned a Bachelor of Science in Mathematics. Following working several years in finance at T. Rowe Price, she went back to earn her Masters in Business Administration (MBA) from the Tepper School of Business at Carnegie Mellon University. She spent six years working in Finance for Marriott International before “retiring”,and focusing on her three children. For the past two years, Lori has homeschooled one of her three children, her son Luke who has learning challenges. One of her greatest joys has been watching him evolve from a student who was afraid of mathematics, to one who embraces the subject, has built a good strong foundation of mathematics, and even somewhat ENJOYS the subject. Lori’s passion is to get children to understand math, especially children who do not think they like math, or who are afraid of math. To break complex ideas down into learnable information, whatever that takes, is her goal for every student. She promises to make it fun, and hopefully pass on her passion for math to every student in her class. Lori has a long history of tutoring students, beginning in highschool, and continuing on through college, business school and throughout her working years. She has tutored students of all ages in math, and taught English as a second language. She lives with her husband, three children and three dogs in Crownsville.

I am happy to have the opportunity to teach at Learning with Grace Homeschool tutorial program. I have a B.A. degree in Spanish from Pennsylvania State University. While teaching adults in a GED program many years ago I became fascinated with how people learn and why the school system had failed all of the students whom I was teaching. This lead me to pursue an M.A. in Educational Psychology from Atlanta University. During my many years as a Navy wife, I taught in alternative learning programs in Connecticut, North Carolina and Florida. In Florida as a homeschooling parent I taught Spanish in a church homeschool program similar to LWG. I also taught at Pace Private School which is a school for children with learning challenges similar to The Lab School in Washington DC. At Pace I taught Art to elementary and middle school classes and all seventh grade subjects. There I focused strongly on the individual needs of each student while working with small classes. I found the students needed organizational skills in addition to their academics and tools for determining their own learning styles to help them in the future. At times their assignment was to teach what they had learned to a family member at home and to present those lessons to our class. Through those many years I was also a professional doll artist. I designed and marketed my own porcelain doll. As a portrait doll artist I sculpted, painted, designed and sewed the clothing and designed my own wigs. I am also a portrait artist using oils and charcoals as my preferred mediums.

I am so excited to continue teaching at Learning with Grace. I am a wife, mom of three little ones, and a lifelong learner. I have a deep passion for reaching students and families who learn differently and to come alongside them in their homeschool journey. I have worked and served in various special needs communities since I was a teenager and God has used those experiences to shape my desire to serve others in this community. People whom I love dearly have struggled with learning differences and it has been one of my greatest joys to be able to help them learn in the way that best meets their needs. I love serving young people as a youth leader, tutor, and in any other way God calls. I cannot wait to continue that as we jump into math this year. I am passionate about this subject and believe in using games and interesting activities to get every type of learner engaged in a subject that is more than the numbers on a page it often appears to be. Math seems abstract to many students and my goal is to show how even this difficult subject can point to the Creator and apply to our lives. I challenge and encourage my students to be confident in their skills and to go beyond their perceived limits, but I also strive to meet each student at their level and learning style.

Hello! I’m Raven Bethancourt, but you can just call me Mrs. Raven. I am so excited for the opportunity to teach about God’s magnificent creation! I’ve always liked the squiggly snakes and the creepy crawlies, (And I hope I can help you respect them too). God has allowed me to experience His world in so many ways, from scuba diving to climbing the Mayan pyramids, and I can’t wait to share those experiences with you. I love music and art, so get ready for plenty of hands-on learning. We’re going to make science fun, and not so scary. I have a bachelor’s degree in Biology, along with a background in environmental education, exotic animal care, small exhibit design and performing arts. Let’s see how much of God’s creation we can put our hands on- safely of course!

I love teaching and the value of imparting knowledge to them has shaped the way I teach. I have learned through the years that each child is unique and the learning process also varies from one to another. I am a native Spanish speaker and I have gained a deeper understanding of the English language as I taught it throughout the years. I love our Creator and His creation and exploring his wonderful work through science is very exciting.

Alejandra is a native Peruvian and mother of two, a girl and a boy. She graduated from St. Augustine University in Peru with a degree in Business Administration. Upon her arrival in the U.S. in 2007 she worked in Early Childhood Development, attaining multiple certifications while working with pre-school and young school age children. She understands what people go through when learning a new language, having arrived in the U.S. with little fluency in English. Alejandra and her husband Reid have homeschooled their two children their entire lives, which revealed to her a love for her language and culture she had previously taken for granted. Her work as a professional educator and experience as a home educator has further stoked a passion for education and the inherent experimentation needed to discover the best possible approach for each unique and individual child. She has also tutored privately as an au pair before starting her own business as a Spanish tutor, as well as leading classes at the co-ops her children have attended.
