"Music history” can be anything from studying a song in any era, learning about the life of a composer,
and/or studying the traits, timeframes, and influence of specific musical eras.
The most important aspect of studying the life of a composer is to humanize them and make them
relatable to the student. Since it is our desire to be inspired by the composers we study, what can the
student identify with this composer that makes them feel like they can be like them?
We will be using multiple resources to explore some well-known and not so known composers and their
music. We will take a personal approach to discuss and learn about their weird little quirks and the ins
and outs of their music. Classical to modern music will be explored.
One more thing, a little side benefit...
Taking music courses has the ripple effect of helping you become better at other courses too. A team of
researchers explored the connection between intelligence and music. They found that music instruction
is far more effective than computer-based instruction. This is especially true when it comes to
developing the abstract critical thinking skills required to learn science and math.
Compared to their peers who don’t study music, music students show significantly less stress and
anxiety when taking a test.
